Getting Started

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?

The first appointment is an Intake Evaluation. Intake appointments generally last from 60-90 minutes depending on how much information you have to provide. Paperwork is to be completed online in advance of the evaluation appointment. The first appointment is NOT a therapy session and will be focused on gathering information rather than intervention.
During the initial intake session, I will begin to hear your story and ask a lot of questions so that I may grow in my understanding of you and your hopes for counseling. We will form an initial impression of the concerns you have, allowing us to create a blueprint for counseling guided by your personal goals. Of course you may continue to provide me with more information in future sessions and the treatment plan may evolve, but this session is focused on understanding the concerns you present and conceptualizing our initial plan to approach counseling.

This appointment is also an opportunity for you to clarify any questions that you may have about the paperwork you are provided as well as ask any questions you may have about my professional history or approach to counseling.
For minors or individuals who have guardians other than themselves, I do ask that the parent or guardian participate in the first 15-30 minutes of the appointment. In most cases I will spend the remainder of the appointment with the client only, and may ask the parent or guardian to step back in for the last 5-10 minutes if necessary.

At the time of your intake, you will have the opportunity to schedule your next appointment if we decide together that outpatient therapy is the right choice for you. In some cases, we may find that you need something different than what I offer at Boxwood Counseling and Consultation PLLC. In that scenario, I will make alternative recommendations and referrals to help you get what you need.

Choose Excitement

Choices can be seen as anxiety provoking or exciting depending on your mindset and perspective. Physiologically, anxiety and excitement are nearly identical experiences. When you are considering joining me or another therapist on this journey, and start to feel those butterfly’s and hastened heart rate- tell yourself it’s excitement about the possibilities rather than the fear of unknown. You might be surprised just how quickly your mind and body will buy in. It may feel terrifying, but it’s a relatively low risk investment. Worst case scenario, you will join for an evaluation, find me annoying, unhelpful and at a loss of 75 minutes of your entire life. Most people who don’t give it a shot will spend more than 75 minutes wondering what would’ve happened if they had.
